Iowa State University and Des Moines Public Schools recently received a $4.5 million grant to improve the teaching of science, technology, engineering and math in elementary schools. The Trinect program brings together a Des Moines teacher, an ISU student teacher, and a graduate engineering student to an elementary classroom one day a week. The program is designed to bring together these 3 experts in different fields to better educate students on STEM subjects. The Trinect program will continue for 5 years, but it's already having a positive impact on students and teachers alike.

A group of ISU 4U Promise students experienced what it might be like to be an engineer last week at the Davinci Flight Camp. The camp, which took place at the Grubb YMCA in Des Moines, gave children the chance to design and fly their own gliders using a video game.





ISU 4U Promise is a partnership between Iowa State University, Des Moines Public Schools and community-based organizations to make college more accessible. ISU Extension and Outreach, Iowa 4-H Youth Development, the YMCA, DAVinCI Flight, and the Iowa Space Grant Consortium are helping sponsor the camp.

Iowa State President Steven Leath signed the ISU 4U Promise agreement at Moulton Elementary. The program is designed to make college more accessible and affordable for students at King Elementary and Moulton Extended Learning Center in Des Moines. The program, first announced two years ago, gives students the chance to earn tuition awards ranging from 20 percent to 100 percent.

Graduating senior Michelle Shealy has spent most of her life competing in gymnastics. And after graduating high school with a 4.0 GPA, she came to Iowa State University looking to excel both in the gym and in the classroom. It worked. In 2014 Shealy became the Big 12 Gymnastics Scholar Athlete of the Year, and she's graduating with a degree in elementary education.

In Wessling's language arts classes at Johnston High School, students are taught to embrace technology and Wessling, the 2010 National Teacher of the Year, works to incorporate multimedia lessons into her curriculum. The teacher is quick to note that even though she's at the head of the class, the students do a lot of teaching when it comes to new technology.
