I was responsible for...
My main responsibility involved developing and implementing all promotions for Healthiest Ames' Open Streets event. I handled media relations, coordinated volunteer recruitment, distributed promotion materials, and managed social media accounts. I had the opportunity to assist with two Open Streets events, which was beneficial because I was able to develop research methods for the second event to evaluate successes and areas that needed improvements.
I will never forget...
Handling media relations and participating in live radio and television interviews were most memorable because they forced me to overcome my fear of public speaking. I was so scared, but somehow was able to stay composed and represent my organization well.
Advice for others...
I would tell students interested in public health or communications work to seek out as many internships and work experiences as possible. Join professional associations and attend their meetings and conferences! Talk to professionals in your area of interest and offer your assistance for their projects. It's all about networking, and you'll learn valuable skills from the professionals in your field. Just stay involved and do things you're afraid of! Public speaking was a fear of mine, and now I actually enjoy it because I conquered my fear and am more confident in my abilities.
