I was responsible for...
As a wellness intern, I mainly worked with the employee wellness program. I helped plan, organize, and promote employee wellness challenges in the areas of fitness, nutrition, and financial wellness. I also promoted wellness by using Mary Greeley's Facebook and Twitter to do weekly wellness tips.
My most valuable effort...
The most valuable project I worked on was the employee fitness challenge called "Climb Mt. Everest." For this challenge, employees had to climb the equivalent flights of stairs to reach Mt. Everest. They also had a walking option, if they were not able to do stairs. It was fun to see this challenge be carried out. It was really rewarding to see so many employees taking physical activity breaks to walk up a flight of stairs or go on a walk, because as a student interested in community and public health, it was neat to see the employees get excited about making healthier choices. It was also a valuable project because it gave real-life practice on conducting an employee wellness challenge.
I will never forget...
Since I interned at a hospital, I was able to shadow in a variety of areas in the hospital some including diabetes education, cardiac rehab, and the cardiac cath lab. It was really interesting to see different parts of healthcare and be able to relate the information I had learned from my kinesiology classes to what I was seeing. My most memorable experience was shadowing a patient having an angiogram. The nurses and techs were really good about explaining to me what was going on.
Advice for others...
My advice to other students is to be open-minded when searching for an internship. Most of my internship involved working with employee wellness, which was not what I originally thought I wanted to do, but I'm glad I got this opportunity, because it introduced me to something new.
I first learned about this career-building experience from...
I learned about my internship by calling the HR Department of Mary Greeley and asking if there were internships available. I had previously volunteered and shadowed at Mary Greeley, so I was familiar with the agency.
