I was responsible for...
Review facility policies, procedures, and emergency protocols. Observe a patient admission/discharge. Process a patient referral. Operate the Scott Care telemetry system and iPad. Perform a patient assessment that includes blood pressure, heart rate, EKG heart rhythm, O2 sat, blood glucose, and symptoms to report. Manage a patient’s exercise prescription. Know the features and operation of all fitness equipment. Demonstrate knowledge of commonly used medications. Demonstrate ability to initiate and facilitate patient education. Design educational material for patient education.
I have gained the confidence to go to work every day with my head held high. I don't have to feel like I have to hide from everyone when I get to work because I have the experience and education to help the people who come through the cardiac rehab clinic.
Every day is going to be different, and you have to be ready to go with the flow and adapt to any situation that comes up.
Advice for others...
Start applying for internships early. If you wait too long, the more popular internship sites will fill up and you will have to look further and further away. The application process may be scary, but most employers are excited to get interns. They enjoy the opportunity to prepare interns for future, full-time employment options.
